Age Discrimination

I had occasion today to telephone the local University. I am a fifty 'something' female who has gained qualifications during my more maturer years. The last course I completed was regarding 'Mentoring in the Work Place'... For some reason I struggled with my assignment, it may have been due to the complete lack of support within the company I work for or on reflection it may have been due to study fatigue on my part. However, I still completed the course and even managed to obtain a respectable grade. At the commencement of the course I borrowed the main reading book from the University Library but failed to return it at the end of the course. Of course I felt embarrassed when I received a letter informing me that they had now had to replace the book and that the cost would be added to my account. I duly telephoned the Library and stated that I would pay all that was due in administration and replacement costs thus settling my account. A conversation ensued that has made me stop and think, it went something like this.... Librarian: Will you be continuing to be a student. Me: Well to be honest with you 'NO'.... I have struggled with this course probably because I have been studying for quite a few years and feel that I have had enough. Librarian: It is difficult fitting in everything with life and work Me: Yes and also at my age I sometimes wonder whether it is worth gaining all the qualifications I have... I know that companies should not discriminate against age, but it does happen in the real world. Librarian: I agree...but can you blame employers, after all why would they invest in someone who only has say 10 years to go when they could employ someone a lot younger with many years ahead and with the same qualifications? Me: Okay.... well I'll forward a cheque today to settle my account...... I put the phone down and contemplated the discussion.... In a way I get it.... why employ someone who may only have another 10 years before they retire? I can think of many reasons which include work experience, understanding, abilities, underpinning knowledge, life experiences etc., etc., However, it is also possible for someone 20 or 30 years younger than me to offer the same attributes...so please consider this...'No matter someones age....assess someone on their individual ability and suitability for the role they have applied for. Do not be put off by their age whether mature or youthful, you could be missing out on employing the right human asset.' What are your experiences or views?
